Plant Genetics and Functional Genomics

Research Interests

My lab focuses on the use of genomics to advance our understanding of crop genomes and how to more effectively improve crops. We are using cutting edge genomics tools to determine all the genes in crop genomes and then to understand their function and role in crops.

Research Vision

My vision is to develop tools, techniques and approaches to more effectively and efficiently improve crops via genetics approaches.  This will lead to economic advancement for Georgia through the release of improved varieties, patented technologies, and help protect the agricultural sector of the state's economy. In particular, we are focused on the utilization of naturally occurring genetic diversity within a species to advance its potential.

In the Lab

We are working with numerous groups around the world to decode the genomes of several crop plants. This will lead to new tools to improve these plants for food security and advancing the economic potential of these crops for growers, many of whom are in developing countries.  We are also working with colleagues at UGA and around the country to understand the entire genome of peanut, an important plant in Georgia.

Why Georgia?

Georgia was very has a long history of plant genetics and breeding at UGA and an incredibly strong faculty spanning the basic to applied sciences.  The GRA appointment was enticing as well for the opportunities to more directly contribute to the economic well being of the State of Georgia.
