My major research interest is focused upon biochemical, immunological, and molecular unraveling of a unique alphaherpesvirus which is naturally found in the macaque monkey host, B virus. This unique, deadly agent is the causative agent of one of the most feared occupational hazards in biomedical science involving macaque monkeys, their cells, tissues, and mucosal fluids. Although the virus is nearly identical to HSV-1 and HSV-2, commonly found in the human population, it is capable of causing death of the human host in as little as weeks following onset of acute disease. We have discovered that morbidity can be reduced in conjunction with early identification of infection followed by initiation of acyclovir therapy. The often fatal outcome of B virus zoonotic infection has spurred investigators to understand the molecular aspects of the virus, the natural host and the foreign host properties that, together, mitigate infection and disease.
