Center for Biotechnology and Genomic Medicine

The Center for Biotechnology and Genomic Medicine promotes interdisciplinary research in genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics. The center’s state-of-the-art facilities enable scientists to study thousands of genes from a single sample through microarray analysis; study the structure and function of proteins; and use advanced computational technologies to model chemical and biological processes. The center recruits independent investigators with expertise in diverse disciplines including genomics, proteomics, immune tolerance, robotics, automation, chemistry, statistics and computational biology. This variety of disciplines reflects the center’s multidisciplinary approach. The center was established in 2002.

Worth noting: The center currently has more than 70 scientists and staff members. Most notable is the center’s studies of diabetes, particularly Type 1 (juvenile) diabetes.

Institutions involved: Medical College of Georgia

Research focus: The center’s current research efforts focus on:

·         Autoimmunity and immune tolerance

·         Diabetes and its complications

·         Cancer proteomics

GRA investment: The center is led by GRA Eminent Scholar Dr. Jin-Xiong She, Ph.D. GRA also has invested in the Center’s state-of-the-art core facilities.

External funding: The center has an annual extramural funding of approximately $8 million. A number of agencies and organizations, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the NIH National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation .
